Mactan Shrine

The seaside park where Lapulapu defeated Magellan in 1521. See the bronze Lapulapu statue and the 1866 Magellan Monument, then eat fresh seafood next door.

On the morning of 27 April 1521, on a beach on Mactan Island, the chieftain Lapulapu and his warriors fought off the Spanish landing party of the explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan was killed, and the Battle of Mactan became one of the best-known moments in Philippine history. Today the place believed to be the battle site is the Mactan Shrine, also called the Liberty Shrine or Lapu-Lapu Shrine, a breezy seaside park in Lapu-Lapu City, close to the resorts of Punta Engaño.

It is a short, easy visit: an hour is enough to see the monuments and read the markers. Many people pair it with a seafood lunch at the restaurants right next to the park.

Why go to the Mactan Shrine

  • Stand at the spot linked to the Battle of Mactan, where Lapulapu is remembered as the first Filipino hero to resist foreign rule.
  • See the tall bronze statue of Lapulapu and the coral-stone Magellan Monument from 1866, side by side.
  • Read the historical markers that tell the story from both sides.
  • Finish with sutukil, Cebu's pick-your-seafood feast, a few steps away.

What to see

The Lapulapu Monument is the heart of the shrine: a bronze statue about 6 metres (20 feet) tall, put up in 1981, showing the datu with a kampilan sword and a shield. It was repainted for the 500th anniversary of the battle in 2021.

Nearby stands the Magellan Monument, a coral-stone tower built in 1866, during Spanish rule, to honour the explorer at the place where he was believed to have died. It was conserved in 2021 and was later damaged by Typhoon Odette (Rai), so its top may look different from older photos.

Walk around the park to find the markers of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines: one for Lapulapu's victory, one for Magellan, one for the spot where Magellan was killed, and a Philippine Quincentennial Marker from the 2021 commemorations. A large Philippine flag flies over the park. The shrine was made a national shrine in 1969.

Kadaugan sa Mactan

Every year on 27 April, the anniversary of the battle and Lapulapu Day, Lapu-Lapu City holds the Kadaugan sa Mactan (Victory at Mactan) at the shrine. Actors and eskrima groups reenact the battle on the beach, with music, costumes and crowds, and officials lay wreaths at the statue. In 2026 the city marked the 505th anniversary there. The program and times change each year, so check the city's announcements in April, arrive early and bring water and a hat.

Seafood next door

Right beside the shrine is a row of seafood restaurants famous for sutukil: you choose fresh fish, shellfish or squid from the display, pay by weight, and have it grilled (sugba), cooked in a light soup (tuwa) or served raw in vinegar (kilaw). It is a fun way to end the visit, but agree on the price before cooking starts. Read our guide to sutukil in Lapu-Lapu for how to order.

How to get to the Mactan Shrine from Cebu City

  1. The easiest way is a Grab or taxi. Ask for the Mactan Shrine (Liberty Shrine) on Punta Engaño Road, Lapu-Lapu City.
  2. The ride crosses to Mactan by one of the bridges, or by the CCLEX expressway via Cordova, and takes about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
  3. On a budget, ride a jeepney or bus to Lapu-Lapu City, then take a jeepney or tricycle towards Punta Engaño and ask to be dropped at the shrine.
  4. Walk in through the main entrance. Entry has been free, but check for any changes at the gate.

Coming from the airport? The shrine is only about 30 minutes away by car, so it is an easy first or last stop. See our guide to getting from Mactan airport to Cebu City, and getting around Cebu for jeepneys and Grab.

When to go

The park is open every day, usually from about 8 am to 5 or 6 pm. There is little shade, so go in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer for photos. Weekdays are calm. The shrine can close for repairs or big events (it closed for about ten days in January 2026 for the ASEAN Tourism Forum), and it is busy around 27 April.

Tips for a good visit

  • This is a national shrine. Be respectful, don't climb the monuments and keep the park clean.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and water. The open plaza gets very hot at midday.
  • Read the markers: they are short and give the story in English.
  • Bring cash for snacks, souvenirs and seafood.
  • Grab and taxis are easy to find in Punta Engaño for the trip back.

Make a day of it: add a boat trip from our Mactan island hopping guide, or cross back to the city for Magellan's Cross and the old Spanish fort in our Cebu City heritage walk.
