Sogod

A quiet town on the north-east coast where the white sand begins. Beach days on the Camotes Sea, a roadside waterfall, a cold spring and an old church, about two hours from Cebu City.

Sogod is a quiet town on the north-east coast of Cebu, about 60 km from Cebu City, between Catmon and Borbon. Most people only see it through a bus window on the way to Bogo, Bantayan or Malapascua, but it is worth a stop. Locals like to say the name, which means "beginning" in Cebuano, comes from the fact that the white-sand beaches start here after the darker sand further south.

Why go to Sogod

  • White-sand beaches on the calm Camotes Sea, with a public beach and a string of small resorts.
  • Bagatayam Falls, a small, free waterfall right by the road.
  • Binaliw Spring, a cold spring with a grotto that locals visit for its water.
  • An old parish church and a sleepy town centre with wooden ancestral houses.
  • An easy stop on the way north, about halfway between Cebu City and Bogo.

Beaches on the Camotes Sea

Sogod's coast faces east across the Camotes Sea. The best-known sand is in the northern barangays towards Borbon, such as Calumboyan, Bawo and Tabunok. There is a public beach in Calumboyan, and most of the beach resorts along this stretch also welcome day visitors for an entrance or cottage fee. Ask what is included before you pay.

The water is usually calm and clear in the dry season, good for swimming and a little snorkelling. Some resorts protect the reef in front of them, so follow their rules, don't stand on coral and never take shells or starfish.

Bagatayam Falls and Binaliw Spring

Bagatayam Falls is a short, wide waterfall, roughly 5 metres high, in Barangay Bagatayam, only a few steps from the main road near the Bagatayam bridge. It is fed by Binaliw Spring further upstream, which supplies the town's water. There has been no entrance fee, and the pool is a favourite picnic spot.

From the falls it is about a 10-15 minute walk or a short habal-habal ride inland to Binaliw Spring, a cold spring with a grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes. Many people believe the water has healing powers and come to fill bottles. Both places are part of daily life: locals bathe and wash clothes here, so keep your voice down, dress modestly and leave no trash.

The town and the church

In the Poblacion, the St. James the Apostle Parish Church (Santiago Apostol) dates from the first half of the 1800s, with a single bell tower and a cream facade. Dress modestly and keep quiet during Mass. The town fiesta is on 25 July, when the Panagsogod Festival brings street dancing, music and a big Mass.

Take a short walk past the old wooden houses around the plaza and the public market. Sogod is also known for its handwoven rattan furniture, made by weavers in Barangay Liki, and for budbod kabog, a sticky millet cake that makes good pasalubong. The town says it has more than 20 caves in the hills. Only visit them with a local guide arranged through the tourism office.

How to get to Sogod from Cebu City

  1. Go to the Cebu North Bus Terminal.
  2. Take a bus going north along the east coast, for example to Bogo, Hagnaya or Maya. Most of them pass through Sogod. Check with the conductor.
  3. Ride for about 2-3 hours, depending on traffic. Ask to get off at the Poblacion, at Bagatayam bridge for the falls, or at your beach.
  4. Take a tricycle or habal-habal for the last stretch to the beach or the spring.

Leave early to beat the traffic out of Metro Cebu. Fares change, so check them on the day. Driving takes about two hours outside rush hour.

Getting around

Buses and minibuses run up and down the coastal highway all day. For short trips, tricycles and habal-habal (motorbike taxis) wait in the town centre. Agree on the fare before you set off, and ask for a helmet.

Where to stay and eat

Sogod has a handful of beach resorts and small inns along the coast, from simple cottages to comfortable rooms, plus a few campsites in the hills. They are busiest on weekends and holidays, so book ahead then. In town you will find carinderias, bakeries and the public market. Bogo City, about an hour north, has more hotels.

When to go

The dry season, from about December to May, brings the calmest sea and sunniest beach days. From around June to November there is more rain and the odd typhoon. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends. The September 2025 earthquake caused landslides on some roads in the hills, so ask locally before you head inland.

Tips for a good trip

  • Bring cash in small bills for fees, cottages and tricycles.
  • Wear water shoes: parts of the shore are rocky.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water.
  • Be respectful at the spring and the falls: they are local water sources.
  • Check the weather before a beach day in the rainy season.

Keep going north: Sogod pairs well with Gibitngil Island off Medellin, Capitancillo Island off Bogo, or the ferry from Hagnaya to Bantayan.
