Santa Fe and Sugar Beach, Bantayan
The ferry town at the south of Bantayan Island and its long white-sand beach strip. Sugar Beach, calm shallow water, big sunsets, Ogtong Cave and Virgin Island, a half-day trip from Cebu City.
Santa Fe is the port town at the southern tip of Bantayan Island, and it is where almost every visitor arrives. It is also home to the island's best beaches: a long, gently curving strip of fine white sand, calm shallow water and big evening sunsets. Sugar Beach is the best-known stretch. If our Bantayan island guide is the overview, this page is the close-up on Santa Fe and its beach strip.
Why visit Santa Fe
- Powdery white sand along a long strip of coast, with water that stays calm and shallow for swimming.
- Easy to reach: the ferry lands right in town, so you can be on the beach within minutes of arriving.
- Sunsets over the sea, with fishing boats and small islets in the view.
- A relaxed mix of small beach resorts, simple eateries and quiet village roads that suit scooters and bicycles.
- Day trips close by: Ogtong Cave, island hopping and Virgin Island.
The beach strip
The beaches of Santa Fe run along the south-west coast, with resorts and cottages set back behind the sand. Sugar Beach is the one many travellers name first, for its wide band of very fine, pale sand. Other parts of the strip are called by the names of the resorts or barangays beside them, and the sand is much the same all along. Walk a few minutes in either direction and you will usually find a quieter spot.
Most beach access is through or beside resorts. Public access exists, but rules differ from place to place, so ask politely and respect any signs. The sea is shallow and gentle, but the tide changes how far out you can walk, and there may be seaweed or rocky patches in places. Swimming shoes help.
Things to do
Watch the sunset
The coast faces west, so late afternoon is the time. Take a drink to the sand about 30 minutes before sunset. It is free, and it is the best part of the day.
Ogtong Cave
A short ride from the beach strip, Ogtong Cave is a small cave with a pool of cool, clear water you can wade or swim in. Entry was reported at about ₱100-₱120 in older travel articles, so check on arrival. Bring water shoes, go in daylight, and watch your head on the low rock.
Virgin Island and island hopping
Boats from Santa Fe visit small sandy islets nearby. Virgin Island (also known as Sillon Island) is a tiny island with very clear water for a swim. Older sources reported roughly a ₱100 island fee per person plus about ₱800 for the boat. Prices, boat size and the best tide all vary, so confirm them before you go. Trips depend on the weather and the sea.
Cycle, ride and wander
Roads are flat and quiet. Rent a bicycle or scooter and explore the village, the fish market and the island's churches. The island's other sights, such as Bantayan town, are in the main Bantayan guide.
Where is Santa Fe and Sugar Beach, Bantayan?
Santa Fe, Cebu
Directions open in Google Maps, starting from where you are. Its travel times are estimates, and ferries and island boats may not be included.
Getting there from Cebu City
- Take a bus from the North Bus Terminal in Mandaue to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio. Buses to Hagnaya leave through the day. The ride takes roughly 3 hours, and the fare is about ₱200-₱250 in 2026 (estimate).
- At Hagnaya, buy a ticket for the ferry to Santa Fe. The crossing takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours. Reported fares were roughly ₱220 for economy class and about ₱400 for VIP seats (estimates for 2025-2026; fares and terminal fees change).
- Ferries run through the day, usually from early morning to the afternoon. Schedules shift with the weather, so check with the operator the day before.
- Santa Fe Port is in town. From the pier, tricycles and habal-habal motorbikes take you to the beach strip in a few minutes. Agree on a fare before you go, or walk if your stay is close.
- Allow a full half-day for the trip. Leave Cebu City by about 6 am to reach the beach in the early afternoon.

Getting around
Santa Fe is small, and many beachfront stays are walkable from each other. For the cave, the town and other beaches, hire a tricycle or a habal-habal, or rent a scooter. Scooter rentals are common near the beach strip and cost about ₱500-₱1,000 a day (estimate, 2026; the price varies by season and bike). Bring your driver's licence, wear a helmet, check the brakes and take photos of the bike before you ride. Our getting around Cebu tip covers road basics.
Where to stay and eat
Stay on or near the beach strip if swimming and sunsets are your priority. Rooms here range from simple fan rooms and cottages to air-conditioned beach resorts. Stay in the port area and town centre if you want cheaper rooms, early ferries and local eateries. Quieter stretches further along the coast give more space and fewer people.
Many resorts have their own restaurants, and the town has small eateries and a market for fresh seafood, grilled fish and local snacks. Ask your host about the day's catch. Book ahead for weekends, holidays, Holy Week and December. Our where to stay and what to eat tips will help.
When to go
The dry season, roughly March to May, has the calmest seas and the clearest sunsets, and also the biggest crowds in Holy Week. December to February is cooler and pleasant but can bring rougher seas. In the typhoon months, ferries can be cancelled at short notice, so keep a spare day. See typhoon season travel and best time to visit Cebu.
Tips for a good trip
- Bring cash. ATMs on the island can run out, and many small places do not take cards.
- Arrive at the port at least an hour before your ferry, and book ahead on holidays.
- Wear reef-safe sunscreen, and do not touch or step on corals or sea creatures.
- Take rubbish back to your stay, and avoid single-use plastic on the beach and boats.
- Dress modestly when you leave the beach for town, the market or a church.
- Agree on prices for boats, tricycles and rentals before you go.
- Check weather and ferry status before you leave; the sea decides the schedule.
