Malapascua Island

A small, car-free island off the northern tip of Cebu, famous for early-morning thresher shark dives and the powdery white sand of Bounty Beach.

Malapascua is a small, laid-back island just off the northern tip of Cebu, only about 2 km long. There are no big roads and no cars, just sandy paths, white beaches and a relaxed village feel. Most visitors come for one thing: the chance to see thresher sharks on an early-morning dive. Many end up staying a few extra days for the beaches and the quiet.

Why go to Malapascua

  • Thresher sharks at Monad Shoal, one of the few places in the world where they are seen regularly.
  • Bounty Beach, a long stretch of powdery white sand lined with palms.
  • Gato Island, a marine sanctuary with an underwater tunnel and lots of reef life.
  • An easy-going island with no cars, perfect for slowing down.

Thresher shark dives at Monad Shoal

Monad Shoal is an underwater plateau a short boat ride from the island. Thresher sharks, with their long, whip-like tails, rise from deeper water early in the morning to visit cleaning stations on the shoal. Dive boats leave before sunrise to be there at the right time.

The dive is fairly deep, so dive shops usually recommend an advanced certification. If you are not certified yet, many shops on the island run courses. Sightings are common but never guaranteed: these are wild animals.

Beaches and island life

Bounty Beach on the south side is the main beach, with soft white sand, calm water and most of the resorts and restaurants. For something quieter, walk the sandy paths around the island to smaller beaches and coves, and stop by the village and the lighthouse on the way.

Gato Island and island hopping

Gato Island is a small, protected island famous among divers for its underwater tunnel, sea snakes and colourful reef life. Island-hopping trips also visit snorkel spots around Malapascua, and some boats offer day trips to nearby islands when the sea is calm. Ask locally what is running, and agree on the price and the stops before you leave.

How to get to Malapascua from Cebu City

  1. Go to the Cebu North Bus Terminal.
  2. Take a bus to Maya in Daanbantayan, at the northern tip of Cebu. The ride takes about 4-5 hours, depending on traffic.
  3. At Maya port, take a boat to Malapascua. The crossing is short, but at low tide you may need to wade or take a small boat to shore, so pack light.

Boats run more often in the morning and early afternoon, so leave Cebu City early. Fares and small port fees change, so check them on the day. If you are coming from Bantayan Island, ferry back to Hagnaya port and travel north to Maya.

Where to stay

Most visitors stay along Bounty Beach, close to the dive shops, restaurants and boats. You will find everything from simple guesthouses to beach resorts. If you are diving at dawn, staying near your dive shop makes the early start much easier.

When to go

The dry season, from about December to May, usually brings the calmest sea and the clearest water. Thresher sharks can be seen all year. From around June to November there is more rain, and rough weather can cancel boats, so keep your plans flexible.

Tips for a good trip

  • Bring enough cash. Card payment and ATMs are limited on a small island.
  • Pack a dry bag for the boat crossing and a pair of water shoes.
  • Book your thresher shark dive a day ahead and get an early night.
  • Never touch or chase sharks, turtles or coral, and follow your dive guide.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and take your trash back with you.
