Best photography spots in Cebu
Cebu is a photographer's playground: old Spanish churches, jungle waterfalls, bright jeepneys, turquoise reefs and sunsets over the sea. This guide groups the best spots by type, with a note on the best time of day and what to bring.
Light times change through the year. In Cebu, sunrise is usually around 5:30 to 6:15 am and sunset about 5:30 to 6:15 pm, so golden hour is early morning and late afternoon. Check a sunrise app for the exact date.
Heritage and city
- Magellan's Cross and the Basilica in the old city are best in the early morning when the plaza is calm. See Cebu City walking tour.
- Fort San Pedro has stone walls that glow in late afternoon light. See Fort San Pedro.
- Taoist Temple in the hills has bright colours and a city view. Photograph the architecture, not worshippers.
- Old churches in the south such as the ones in Boljoon, Argao and Carcar photograph well in soft morning light. Ask before shooting during services.
- Simala Shrine looks like a castle on a hill. See Simala Shrine and dress modestly.

Views over the city and hills
- Busay and the Tops lookout: city and sea views, best at sunset or after dark when the lights come on. See Busay. Bring a tripod for night shots.
- Osmeña Peak in Dalaguete is the island's highest point. Go for sunrise and watch the sea of hills turn gold. See Osmeña Peak.
- Mantalongon highlands have misty fields and cool light. See Mantalongon.

Water and waterfalls
- Kawasan Falls in Badian has turquoise pools. Go early for fewer people. See Kawasan Falls.
- Mantayupan Falls and Tumalog Falls are good for long-exposure shots. See Mantayupan and Tumalog. Use a small tripod and a neutral density filter if you have one.
- Bojo River offers calm water and mangrove views. See Bojo River.

Reefs, sardines and islands
- Moalboal's sardine run is a top underwater shot, even with a phone in a waterproof case. See Moalboal and snorkelling in Cebu.
- Pescador Island and the south reefs offer colour and clear water. See Pescador Island.
- Beaches and sandbars in Malapascua, Bantayan and the Camotes shine at sunrise and sunset. See also sunrise and sunset spots and best beaches.
Street life and food
- Jeepneys are colourful and photogenic. A slow shutter speed gives nice motion blur.
- Markets such as Carbon Market give lively scenes. Ask before you photograph vendors, and consider buying something.
- Food shots work best near a window. Try shooting lechon, fresh fruit and sweets. See the street food guide.

Gear and settings
- Phone is enough. Clean the lens, as humidity leaves a film. Use a waterproof pouch for water shots.
- Wide lens for churches, waterfalls and landscapes.
- Small tripod for sunrise, night and waterfalls.
- Spare batteries and a power bank. Hot weather drains them faster.
- Lens cloth and silica packs help with fogging when you go from air-con to outside.
- Dry bag on boats. See the packing list.
Drones and permission
Drone rules in the Philippines are managed by the Civil Aviation Authority. Flying near airports (like Mactan-Cebu), crowds and sensitive sites is restricted or banned. Check the current rules before you fly, and ask the local authority or resort first. Many places do not allow drones at all.
Respectful photography
- Ask permission before photographing people, especially children, and accept a "no".
- Keep your distance from wildlife. Never touch turtles or coral, and turn off the flash around tarsiers and fish.
- In churches, keep quiet, avoid flash and do not photograph during prayers or ceremonies unless allowed.
- Do not step on coral, move rocks or leave rubbish for a better shot. See responsible travel in Cebu.
- Stay on marked trails near viewpoints and cliffs.
A simple plan
- Sunrise at Osmeña Peak or a south coast beach.
- Mid-morning at a waterfall, before the crowds.
- Midday rest. Light is harsh, so eat and cool off.
- Late afternoon at a heritage church or viewpoint.
- Sunset by the sea, then night views from Busay.
