The coral stone facade and bell tower of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Argao

South Cebu

Argao Heritage Town

A slow, old-world town on Cebu's south-east coast with a beautiful 18th-century stone church, torta and hot chocolate, handwoven hablon and green hills close by.

Argao is a quiet coastal town about 68 km south of Cebu City, and one of the oldest in the province. Its town centre still feels like old Cebu, with a walled stone church, a historic town hall and a shady plaza. Argao is also known for three local treasures that all start with "T": torta (a soft, sweet cake), tsokolate (thick hot chocolate) and tela, the handwoven cloth called hablon. Add green hills, waterfalls and the sea, and it is an easy place to spend a slow day or two.

Why go to Argao

  • The St. Michael the Archangel Church, one of the finest old stone churches in Cebu.
  • Torta and tsokolate, a classic Argao snack.
  • Watching hablon being woven on traditional looms.
  • Nature nearby: Argao Nature Park, waterfalls and quiet beaches.

St. Michael the Archangel Church

Argao was founded as an Augustinian mission in 1608. The present church, built of coral stone and hardwood, was finished in 1788, and the bell tower was added later. The facade is decorated with carvings of St. Michael, angels and flowers. Inside, look up at the colourful ceiling paintings, made in the 1920s, and look for the old pipe organ and the raised pulpit. The church sits inside a stone-walled compound with old gates.

Next to the church is the Capilla Mortuoria, an old mortuary chapel with carvings of skulls, bones and angels. Across the plaza stands the old town hall, a fine example of the "bahay na bato" (stone house) style. Please dress modestly inside the church and stay quiet during Mass.

Torta, tsokolate and hablon

Argao torta is a soft, rich cake traditionally made with tuba (coconut wine) and baked in small moulds. Bakeries around town sell it fresh, and it is perfect with a cup of thick, slightly bitter tsokolate. Buy a box to take home.

Hablon is a traditional woven cloth made from fibres such as cotton, abaca and piña. Weavers in Argao still work on wooden looms, and there is a weaving centre in town where visitors can watch and learn. Ask locally or at the tourism office about visits.

Nature around Argao

  • Argao Nature Park: a green, easy stop near town, a short tricycle ride from the plaza.
  • Bugasok Falls: a single-drop waterfall with a clear pool in the hills, about 30-45 minutes from town by habal-habal.
  • Mt. Lantoy: a forested karst mountain for hikers. Go with a local guide.
  • Beaches along the coast, such as Mahayahay and Lawis, for a quiet swim or sunset.

How to get to Argao from Cebu City

  1. Go to the Cebu South Bus Terminal.
  2. Take a bus heading south along the east coast (for example to Oslob or Santander) and get off at Argao town proper. The ride takes about 2 hours, depending on traffic.
  3. Walk to the church and plaza, or take a tricycle around town.

Fares change, so check them on the day. For the hills and waterfalls, hire a habal-habal or tricycle in town and agree on the price and waiting time before you go.

Where to stay and eat

Argao has small beach resorts and guesthouses along the coast, plus simple places to eat in the town centre. Many visitors come for the day, but staying a night lets you see the old town in the quiet morning light and pair it with nature trips. The seaside area in town is a pleasant spot in the evening.

When to go

The dry season, from about December to May, is best for waterfalls, hiking and the beach. Argao's town fiesta for St. Michael is held around late September, when the town is lively and busy. Rain is more common from June to November, and trails get muddy.

Tips for a good trip

  • Visit the church early in the morning, when it is cool and quiet.
  • Dress modestly for the church: cover your shoulders and knees.
  • Buy torta on your last stop so it stays fresh.
  • Use a local guide for Mt. Lantoy and other forest trails.
  • Don't leave trash at waterfalls or on trails.
