Boljoon Heritage Town
A small seaside town in South Cebu with a fortress-like coral stone church, a parish museum, Spanish-era watchtowers and views over the sea from Ili Rock.
Boljoon is a small, peaceful town on the south-east coast of Cebu, squeezed between green hills and the sea. Its pride is the Patrocinio de Maria Church, a fortress-like coral stone church that is one of the best-preserved Spanish-era churches in the country. Around it you will find a parish museum, an old cemetery gate, Spanish watchtowers and the rocky landmark of Ili, with views over the water. It is a good stop on the way to or from Oslob.
Why go to Boljoon
- The Patrocinio de Maria Church, a National Cultural Treasure and National Historical Landmark.
- A parish museum with church treasures and finds from archaeological digs.
- Spanish-era watchtowers built to watch for raiders from the sea.
- A quiet seaside town that is easy to explore on foot.
Patrocinio de Maria Church
Boljoon began as a mission in the late 1500s. The present church was started in 1783 by the Augustinian priest Father Ambrosio Otero and built from coral stone. With its thick walls, square bell tower and a large defensive blockhouse from the early 1800s, the whole complex was designed to protect the town from raids. It was declared a National Historical Landmark in 1999 and a National Cultural Treasure in 2001.
Inside, look for the carved wooden pulpit with its folk-art panels of saints, and the old altars. Outside, walk to the old church cemetery, whose coral stone gate faces the sea and has skull carvings on its walls. Please dress modestly and keep quiet, especially during Mass.
The museum and the old convent
The long, L-shaped convent next to the church houses the Boljoon Parish Museum. It displays religious objects, old church items and finds from archaeological digs in the churchyard, which uncovered old burials, jars and even a gold earring. Opening days and hours can change, so check locally. The Escuela Católica, an old school building, is also part of the church complex.
Watchtowers and Ili Rock
In Spanish times, Boljoon was guarded by a series of watchtowers along the coast, including El Gran Baluarte near the church. One tower once stood on top of Ili Rock (Ilihan), a large rock formation by the sea that is one of the town's best-known landmarks. The views of the coast and the town from this area are lovely, especially in the late afternoon.
The town has set up a self-guided heritage walk with signboards. You can also visit the tourism and heritage office at the municipal building across from the church for a map and local advice.
How to get to Boljoon from Cebu City
- Go to the Cebu South Bus Terminal.
- Take a bus heading south along the east coast to Oslob or Santander and ask to be dropped in Boljoon town. The church is right by the highway. The ride takes about 3-4 hours, depending on traffic and stops.
- Walk around the church complex, museum and seaside, or take a tricycle to Ili Rock.
Fares change, so check them on the day. Leave Cebu City early, since the trip is long. Boljoon is only about 30-40 minutes north of Oslob, so it is easy to combine with a trip there.
Where to stay and eat
Boljoon has a few simple beach resorts and guesthouses, and small eateries in the town centre. Many travellers visit on a day trip, or stay in nearby Oslob, which has more choice. If you stay over, the town is calm and pretty in the early morning.
When to go
The dry season, from about December to May, is the most comfortable time to travel along the coast. The church and museum can be visited all year. Rain is more common from June to November. Weekday mornings are the quietest.
Tips for a good trip
- Wear modest clothes for the church: covered shoulders and knees.
- Ask before taking photos inside the museum, and don't touch the displays.
- Bring cash. ATMs and card payment are limited in small towns.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen for walking around town.
- Stay on safe paths and away from rock edges around Ili Rock.
Boljoon fits nicely into a South Cebu trip. Continue to Oslob further south, or stop at the old stone church of Argao on the way back to Cebu City.
