The curtain-like flow of Tumalog Falls over its mossy rock wall in Oslob, Cebu

South Cebu

Tumalog Falls

A wide curtain of water spilling down a mossy wall into a shallow, turquoise pool, just a few minutes from the whale shark area in Oslob. Cool, gentle and easy to reach.

Tumalog Falls is one of the prettiest little surprises in South Cebu. In the hills of Barangay Luka in Oslob, a thin, wide curtain of water drips and sprays down a tall wall covered in moss and ferns, landing in a shallow pool with a soft turquoise colour. It feels more like a giant natural shower than a roaring waterfall, and that is exactly its charm. It is only a short ride from the whale shark watching area, so most people visit it on the same morning.

Check the water first

Tumalog Falls was reported to have dried up for a time in 2024. Its flow depends on the rain, so it can be thin in the dry months. Ask your Oslob guesthouse or habal-habal driver how it looks before you make the trip.

Why go to Tumalog Falls

  • A curtain-like waterfall that falls in fine threads and mist over a mossy rock wall.
  • A shallow basin, so you can stand under the spray even if you are not a strong swimmer.
  • Cool, fresh water and shade, a welcome break on a hot South Cebu day.
  • An easy add-on to the whale sharks in Oslob or a trip to Sumilon Island.

The falls and the pool

From the entrance, a short walk brings you to the main wall. The water spreads out over the rock and falls in hundreds of thin streams, with mossy, mushroom-shaped rock formations at the bottom. The pool below is wide and mostly shallow, with a light turquoise tint from the limestone. The water is cold, so it is refreshing rather than relaxing at first.

There are simple facilities near the falls, such as tables, cottages and changing areas, and small stalls usually sell snacks and drinks. The spot is popular for photos, so be patient and share the best angles with other visitors.

A seasonal waterfall

Tumalog depends on the rain. In the dry months the flow can shrink to a light splash. In 2024 the falls dried up and closed for several months during El Niño, and reopened in late October once the water came back. Before you make a special trip, check recent photos, reviews or the Oslob tourism office page to see if the falls are flowing and open.

How to get to Tumalog Falls from Cebu City

  1. Go to the Cebu South Bus Terminal.
  2. Take a bus to Bato via Oslob, which runs down the east coast. The ride to Oslob takes about 3-4 hours.
  3. Ask the conductor to drop you at the Tumalog Falls junction on the highway, near the whale shark area in Tan-awan.
  4. From the junction, take a habal-habal (motorbike taxi) up and down the steep road to the falls, then pay the entrance fee.

The access road is cemented but very steep, and private cars usually park near the top, so most visitors ride a motorbike down. Entrance and habal-habal fares are small, but they change, so check them on the day and agree on the fare before you go.

Combining it with the whale sharks

Whale shark watching in Oslob starts very early and is done by mid-morning, which leaves time to cool off at Tumalog afterwards. If you join, follow the rules: keep your distance, never touch the animals and skip sunscreen before you get in the water. Read our Oslob guide for the full picture, including the debate around feeding the whale sharks.

Getting around

Buses run along the coastal highway all day, so it is easy to move between Oslob town, the whale shark area, Tumalog and the boat port for Sumilon. Tricycles and habal-habal handle the short hops. Many travellers also join a private day tour from Cebu City that bundles the whale sharks, Tumalog and sometimes Sumilon.

Where to stay and eat

There is no accommodation at the falls, but there are plenty of guesthouses and small resorts along the highway in Oslob, especially around Tan-awan. Staying overnight makes the early whale shark start much easier. Food at the falls is simple, so for a proper meal head back to the eateries along the highway or into Oslob town.

When to go

The falls are fullest during and just after the rainy season, roughly June to January. In the dry season the flow can be very weak. Go early in the morning or on a weekday: by late morning, tour groups from the whale shark area arrive and the pool gets busy.

Tips for a good trip

  • Bring cash in small bills for the entrance, habal-habal and parking.
  • Wear sandals or water shoes with grip. The rocks are mossy and slippery.
  • Hold on tight on the steep habal-habal ride, and ask the driver to go slowly.
  • Do not climb the mossy wall. It is fragile and you can slip.
  • Skip soap and sunscreen in the pool, and take your trash home.

Make a full South Cebu day of it: start with the whale sharks in Oslob, cool off at Tumalog, then cross to the white sandbar of Sumilon Island.
