The best day trips from Cebu City

Cebu City is a handy base. From one hotel you can swim under waterfalls, snorkel with sardines, climb a mountain for sunrise or hop between islands, and still be back for dinner. The catch is distance: Cebu is a long, narrow island, and the best spots in the south are three hours or more away on roads that get busy.
Below are realistic day trips, from close and easy to long and early. Travel times are typical one-way times by bus or car from Cebu City and can be longer in traffic. For terminals and buses, see Cebu bus terminals and getting around Cebu.
Close to the city (under 1.5 hours)
- Busay (30-60 minutes): the hills right above the city, with the Taoist Temple, the Temple of Leah, Sirao's flower farms and city views from Tops. Go in the late afternoon for the sunset and the city lights.
- Mactan island hopping (30-60 minutes to the port): a boat day around the small islands off Mactan, with snorkelling, a seafood lunch and calm water most of the year.
- Olango Island (about 1-1.5 hours including the boat): a quiet island with a famous wildlife sanctuary for migratory birds, best from about September to March.
- Mactan Shrine and a seafood lunch at Lapu-Lapu sutukil: an easy half day of history and grilled fish.
- Liloan (about 1 hour north): a lighthouse, a seaside walk and the famous rosquillos biscuits.
Easy day trips (1.5-2.5 hours)
- Carcar and Simala Shrine: Carcar's heritage houses, old church and chicharon are about 1-1.5 hours south; Simala, the castle-like church in Sibonga, is another 30-45 minutes on. Dress modestly for Simala: covered shoulders and knees.
- Danasan Eco Adventure Park in Danao (about 1.5-2.5 hours north): zip lines, a sky walk, ATV rides and other adventure activities in green hills.
- Mt. Manunggal (about 1.5-2.5 hours west): cool mountain air, the 1957 Magsaysay memorial and big views from the Transcentral Highway.
- Carbon Market and the old downtown: no travel at all, but a full and very local day in the city itself.
Long day trips (3-4 hours each way)
These are possible in one day, but they are long. You will spend six or more hours on the road, so leave very early and keep the plan simple. If you can, stay one night instead.
- Oslob and Tumalog Falls (3-4 hours by bus): whale shark watching runs only in the morning, so take a bus from about 4-5 am. Tumalog, a curtain-like waterfall, is a short habal-habal ride away. Read the Oslob guide first, including the debate about feeding the sharks, and follow all the rules in the water.
- Moalboal (about 3 hours): snorkel with the sardine run and sea turtles right off Panagsama Beach. Bring your own mask if you have one.
- Kawasan Falls (3-4 hours): turquoise pools in Badian. Add canyoneering only if you leave Cebu City before about 5 am.
- Osmeña Peak for sunrise (about 3 hours to Dalaguete, then a ride up the mountain): this means leaving the city around 2 am. It is easier to sleep nearby the night before.
- Bohol by fast ferry (about 2 hours each way): see the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers on a tour from Tagbilaran. Check our Cebu to Bohol ferry guide.
Which places are too far for a day?
Malapascua, Bantayan and the Camotes Islands need a long bus ride plus a boat, and boat times are limited. Give each of them at least one night, ideally two. Our 5-day Cebu itinerary shows how to fit them in.
Bus, tour or private car?
- Public bus: the cheapest option. Buses to the south leave from the Cebu South Bus Terminal, and to the north from the Cebu North Bus Terminal. Early buses fill up, so arrive a little before you want to leave.
- Joiner tours: shared vans with a set plan, such as Oslob and Tumalog in one day. They save time on connections and are good if you travel alone.
- Private car with driver: the most comfortable choice for families or groups. You can split the cost and stop where you like.
- Grab and taxis: fine for Busay, Mactan and other places near the city. Check you can get a ride back from quieter spots before you go.
Tips for a smooth day trip
- Start early. Before 6 am beats traffic, heat and crowds. Many attractions are best in the morning.
- Check the weather, especially from June to November. Boat trips and waterfalls may close after storms. See typhoon season travel.
- Bring cash in small bills for fees, boats and food. Read money in Cebu.
- Know the time of the last bus back. Ask the conductor or terminal staff, as it changes.
- Pack water, sunscreen, a dry bag and a change of clothes. Our Cebu packing list has the rest.
- Travelling with children? Pick one close spot instead of a long one. See Cebu with kids.
- Respect the places you visit: follow fees and rules, do not touch coral or animals, and take your rubbish with you. Read responsible travel in Cebu.
Not sure which to choose? For a first visit, try one easy trip near the city, such as Busay or Mactan island hopping, and one big day in the south, such as Moalboal or Oslob. Then decide where you want to stay longer.
