Beyond Cebu

Sagada

A cool mountain town in the Cordillera, known for the hanging coffins of Echo Valley, Sumaguing Cave, sunrise over a sea of clouds and pine-scented hikes.

Sagada is a small mountain town high in the Cordillera of northern Luzon, at around 1,500 metres above sea level. After the heat of Cebu, it feels like another world: cool air, pine forests, rice terraces and limestone cliffs. The local Igorot communities have lived here for centuries, and their traditions, like the famous hanging coffins, are still part of daily life. It is far from Cebu, but it is one of the most memorable trips in the Philippines.

Why go to Sagada

  • The hanging coffins of Echo Valley, an old burial tradition on the cliffs.
  • Sumaguing Cave, a big cave with smooth rock formations and cool pools.
  • Sunrise at Kiltepan, often over a sea of clouds.
  • Bomod-ok Falls, a tall waterfall at the end of a walk through rice terraces.
  • Cool weather, pine trees and a slow, friendly mountain town.

First stop: register at the tourism office

Every visitor must register at the Municipal Tourism Office in the town centre, near the Municipal Hall, and pay a small environmental fee (about ₱100 when last reported, so check the current fee). Keep your official receipt with you, as it works as your pass to the sites. Many sites, including Echo Valley, the caves and Bomod-ok Falls, need an accredited local guide. You can arrange guides at the tourism office or at the official guide centres, and guide fees are set per group.

Sagada has also limited visitor numbers at some sites during busy periods, and single-use plastic bottles are discouraged, so bring a refillable bottle. On some community ritual days, some areas close to visitors. Your guide or the tourism office will tell you.

Things to do in Sagada

  • Echo Valley and the hanging coffins. A short guided walk past the Anglican church and the old cemetery leads to the cliffs where coffins hang. Keep your voice low, never touch the coffins and stay on the trail.
  • Sumaguing Cave. A guided caving trip down slippery rocks into a huge cave with smooth formations and pools. Expect to get wet. Fit visitors can ask about the longer Cave Connection from Lumiang Cave to Sumaguing.
  • Lumiang burial cave. Old coffins are stacked at the cave entrance. Look respectfully and do not touch anything.
  • Kiltepan viewpoint. Go before dawn for sunrise. On cool mornings, clouds can fill the valleys below like a white sea.
  • Bomod-ok Falls. A guided hike of about an hour each way, down stone steps through rice terraces and villages, to a tall waterfall with a cold pool.
  • Lake Danum. A quiet lake in the pine hills outside town, lovely for a picnic or the sunset.
  • Marlboro Country and Blue Soil. A longer guided ridge hike with wide mountain views.

Getting there from Cebu

There are no flights to Sagada, so the trip takes most of a day (or a night). Check schedules and book bus seats ahead, especially on weekends and holidays.

  1. Fly from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Manila (many flights a day) or to Clark. About 1.5 hours.
  2. From Manila, take a direct overnight bus to Sagada, which goes via Banaue and Bontoc and takes about 10-12 hours. Or take a bus to Baguio (about 4-6 hours from Manila, less from Clark).
  3. From Baguio, take a daytime bus up the mountain road to Sagada. The ride takes about 6 hours, and the last trips leave around early afternoon.
  4. Go straight to the Municipal Tourism Office to register before you explore.

The mountain roads are long and winding. If you get motion sickness, take something before you go and sit near the front.

Getting around

The town centre is small and walkable, but hilly. For Kiltepan, Lake Danum or the trailheads, you can hire a local van or jeepney through the tourism office or your guide. Guides often arrange transport as part of a tour.

Where to stay and eat

You will find simple inns, guesthouses and homestays, many with wooden rooms and mountain views. Book ahead for weekends, Holy Week and the Christmas holidays, when Sagada gets very busy. Small cafes serve hearty food, fresh vegetables, local coffee and the town's well-known yoghurt and lemon pie. Many places close early, so eat dinner on time.

When to go and the weather

The dry season, from about November to April, is the best time for hikes and caves. Sagada is cool all year, with daytime temperatures often around 17-20°C. From December to February nights can get really cold, sometimes near 10°C or lower, so pack proper warm clothes. From about May to October there is more rain, trails get muddy and some caves or falls may close.

Tips and respect

  • Register first, carry your receipt, and always use accredited local guides where they are required.
  • Respect burial sites: no climbing, touching, loud noise or posing for silly photos.
  • Ask before you photograph people, and follow local customs and posted signs.
  • Bring a jacket, warm layers, good shoes with grip and a rain jacket.
  • Bring enough cash. ATMs are few and can run out on busy weekends.
  • Take your trash with you and bring a refillable water bottle.
