Sinulog festival guide: dates, events and tips

Sinulog is Cebu's biggest festival and one of the most famous in the Philippines. Every January, millions of people fill Cebu City for days of prayer, music, dancing, colourful costumes and street parties. It is loud, crowded, joyful and unforgettable. If you are lucky enough to be in Cebu at that time, here is how to enjoy it.
Mark your calendar
Sinulog is held on the third Sunday of January. In 2027 the main parade day falls on 17 January. The full schedule is usually announced late in the year, so check the official Sinulog pages before you book.
What is Sinulog?
Sinulog honours the Santo Niño, the image of the Holy Child Jesus kept at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu City. The image is linked to the arrival of Christianity in Cebu in 1521, and the festival celebrates both faith and Cebuano culture.
The name comes from the Cebuano word for the movement of water, like a river current. The Sinulog dance follows that idea: forward and backward steps to the beat of drums. You will hear the chant "Pit Señor!" everywhere. It is a call to the Santo Niño, and everyone joins in.
When is Sinulog?
The main day is the third Sunday of January. In 2027 that is Sunday, 17 January. The religious celebration, called Fiesta Señor, runs for more than a week before it, and parties and events fill the whole month.
What happens
- Opening walk: the festivities open with a huge dawn walk of devotees through the city to the basilica.
- Novena masses: nine days of masses at the basilica, held many times a day, often in the open-air Pilgrim Center. They are packed, and many people hold candles and dance with them.
- Fluvial procession: on the Saturday before Sinulog, the Santo Niño image is carried across the water by boat in the early morning, escorted by a big fleet of decorated boats.
- Solemn procession: on Saturday afternoon, a long procession carries the image through the streets of the city. It can last for hours.
- Grand parade and ritual showdown: on Sunday, groups of dancers from Cebu and other provinces parade in bright costumes and compete in the ritual showdown. In recent years the main venue has been the Cebu City Sports Center, with paid seats sold for the stands.
- Street parties: music, food stalls and crowds fill the streets, especially on Saturday night and Sunday.
Event times and venues are announced each year by the organisers and the basilica. Check the official schedule close to the date.
Book early
- Rooms in Cebu City sell out and prices rise. Book weeks or months ahead, or stay on Mactan or a little outside the centre.
- Flights into Cebu around Sinulog weekend fill up early too.
- Tickets for seats at the grand parade venue usually go on sale before the festival. Buy only through official channels.
- If you want to escape the crowds after, plan a beach escape. See our 5-day Cebu itinerary.
Tips for the crowds
- Go early. For the parade, find your spot early in the morning. Roads close and traffic stops for much of the day.
- Walk. Many roads are closed, and Grab and taxis get stuck or charge more. Wear comfortable shoes.
- Keep valuables safe. Crowds attract pickpockets. Use a small bag worn in front, keep your phone in a front pocket and leave expensive items at your hotel.
- Agree on a meeting point with friends in case you get separated. Mobile signal can be weak in big crowds.
- Stay cool. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and an umbrella for sun or rain.
- Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Face paint, water and spray are part of the street fun.
- Respect the faith. For many people, Sinulog is a deeply religious event. Dress modestly at the basilica and do not push in front of people praying.
- Drink sensibly, and go back to your hotel with friends at night.

Getting there
Most events happen around the old centre of Cebu City, near the basilica, Magellan's Cross and the Cebu City Sports Center. Read about the area in our Cebu City heritage guide. Coming from the airport? See Mactan airport to Cebu City, and allow lots of extra time during festival weekend.
Is Sinulog right for me?
If you love festivals, music and big crowds, Sinulog is one of the best times to be in Cebu. If you prefer quiet, or you are travelling with small children, visit the city before the main weekend, or watch some of it and then head to a beach. January is also in the drier season, which is good for trips around the island. Read more in the best time to visit Cebu.
