Olango Island

A quiet island a short boat ride from Mactan, home to a protected wetland where thousands of migratory birds rest each year. Come for birdwatching, mangroves and a slow island day.

Olango is a low, flat island just east of Mactan, a short boat ride from the resorts and the airport. It is simple and rural, with fishing villages, coral-stone fences and very little traffic. Its big draw is the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected wetland of tidal flats, seagrass and mangroves where thousands of migratory shorebirds stop to rest and feed on their long journeys between Siberia, China and Australia.

Why go to Olango

  • Birdwatching in the Philippines' first Ramsar wetland of international importance.
  • Rare visitors such as the Chinese egret and the Asian dowitcher.
  • Boardwalks through mangroves and wide, shallow tidal flats.
  • An easy, low-cost day trip from Mactan, with a real island feel.

The wildlife sanctuary

The sanctuary covers roughly 900 hectares on the south-western side of the island, in the barangay of San Vicente. It was protected in 1992 and named the country's first Ramsar site in 1994. Close to 100 bird species have been recorded here, around half of them migratory. A walkway leads out to an observation deck and bird hide over the flats.

Birds are spread far out at low tide, feeding on the flats. As the tide rises, they are pushed closer to the mangroves to roost, which is the best time to watch them. Check the tide times before you go and aim to arrive an hour or two before high tide. There is a small entrance fee, usually higher for foreign visitors, and sometimes an extra fee for big camera gear. Binoculars and a spotting scope may be available at the deck, but bring your own if you have them.

More things to do on Olango

Rent a bicycle or a motorbike near the port and explore the quiet roads, villages and shoreline. The Talima Marine Sanctuary on the north-west side is known among divers for its reef. Along the coast you will also find simple floating seafood restaurants, reached by small boat, where you choose your catch and have it cooked. Life here is slow, so do not expect resorts, shops or nightlife.

How to get to Olango from Cebu City

  1. Take Grab or a taxi to Angasil port in the Punta Engaño area of Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City. Allow about 1 hour from Cebu City, more in heavy traffic.
  2. Board a public boat to Santa Rosa port on Olango. The crossing takes about 20-30 minutes, and boats leave regularly through the day.
  3. At Santa Rosa, hire a tricycle or habal-habal to the sanctuary in San Vicente, about 15-20 minutes away. Agree on a round-trip price if you want the driver to wait.

Boats run more often in the morning, and the last crossings back are in the late afternoon. Ask about the last boat as soon as you arrive. Some island-hopping tours from Mactan can also include Olango.

Where to eat and stay

Most visitors come as a day trip and stay on Mactan or in Cebu City. On the island you will find small carinderias (local eateries), stores selling snacks and drinks, and the floating seafood restaurants. Bring your own water and snacks for the sanctuary, as there is little to buy there.

When to go

Migratory birds are usually present from about September to April, with the biggest numbers around December to February. Early morning or late afternoon is cooler and better for photos. The island is still pleasant outside the bird season, but you will see fewer birds. Rough weather can stop the boats, so check the forecast.

Tips for a good trip

  • Bring binoculars, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. There is little shade on the flats.
  • Keep your voice low and never chase or disturb the birds. Stay on the walkways.
  • Carry cash. There are few or no ATMs on the island.
  • Wear sandals or shoes you do not mind getting wet.
  • Take your rubbish back with you to Mactan.

Make it a full weekend by the water with Mactan island hopping, or spend a morning on a heritage walk in downtown Cebu City.
