Cebu itinerary: 3 days and 2 nights

Three days is a short trip in Cebu, but it is enough for one good taste of the island if you choose one direction and stick to it. The biggest mistake is trying to see the city, the south and the north in one go. Buses are cheap but slow, and the far ends of the island are 3-5 hours from Cebu City.
Below are three tried-and-tested routes. Each one has 2 nights, day-by-day plans, honest travel times and where to sleep. For longer trips, see our 5-day Cebu itinerary and the ready-made plans on our itineraries page. Travel times below are rough estimates from 2025-2026 and depend a lot on traffic.
Which route suits you?
- Route 1: City and Moalboal. Best for first-timers who want a mix of history, food and the sea, with only one long bus ride each way.
- Route 2: South Cebu adventure loop. Best for active travellers who want waterfalls, canyoneering and the far south, and don't mind early starts.
- Route 3: One northern island. Best if you want white sand and a slow pace, or diving with thresher sharks.
- Arriving late on day 1 or flying out early on day 3? Choose Route 1. It has the shortest transfers and the city is close to the airport.
Route 1: Cebu City and Moalboal
Day 1: The old city and a view from the hills
- Walk the Cebu City heritage area: Magellan's Cross, the Basilica del Santo Niño, the Cathedral and Fort San Pedro are all close together. Dress modestly in churches.
- Have lunch near Carbon Market or try lechon. Our lechon guide has ideas.
- In the late afternoon, take a taxi or Grab up to Busay for sunset and dinner with a view over the city.
- Sleep: Cebu City, around the IT Park, Lahug or Fuente Osmeña areas. See where to stay in Cebu.

Day 2: Sardines and sunset in Moalboal
- Leave early (before 6 am if you can) from the Cebu South Bus Terminal on a bus signed "Bato via Barili". The ride to Moalboal takes about 3 hours. Our bus terminal guide explains the signs.
- Check in near Panagsama Beach, then snorkel straight off the shore for the famous sardine run. Sea turtles are often nearby. Look, but never touch or chase them.
- Spend the afternoon on a boat trip to Pescador Island, or relax at White Beach (Basdako).
- Sleep: Moalboal, around Panagsama Beach for restaurants and dive shops, or White Beach for a quieter stay.

Day 3: Kawasan Falls, then back to the city
- Join an early canyoneering trip that ends at Kawasan Falls in Badian. Most tours pick you up in Moalboal and take about half a day. Read canyoneering in Badian before you book.
- Not into jumping? Visit Kawasan Falls on foot instead, or have a lazy morning at Lambug Beach.
- Catch a bus back to Cebu City by early afternoon. Allow 3-4 hours, more on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Route 2: South Cebu adventure loop
This loop skips the city and goes straight south from the airport, down the east coast and back up the west coast. It is busy but rewarding. Our guide to getting from Moalboal to Oslob and around South Cebu has the bus details.

Day 1: Down the east coast to Oslob
- From the Cebu South Bus Terminal, take a bus signed "Bato via Oslob". The ride to Oslob takes about 3.5-4 hours.
- If you start early, stop on the way at the old church of Boljoon, or walk the historic Cuartel and church in Oslob town in the late afternoon.
- Sleep: Oslob, near the town centre or along the coast south of town, so you are close to the morning activities.
Day 2: Oslob morning, Moalboal evening
- Start early with the sandbar of Sumilon Island or the tall curtain of Tumalog Falls. If you consider whale shark watching, read our Oslob guide first: the feeding of the sharks is debated, and it is your choice.
- Around midday, take a bus south to the Bato terminal in Samboan and change to a bus going north "via Barili" to Moalboal. Allow about 3-3.5 hours in total.
- Arrive in time for a sunset swim and a sardine snorkel at Panagsama.
- Sleep: Moalboal, or Badian if you want to be closer to the canyoneering start.
Day 3: Canyoneering or a mountain sunrise
- Choose one: canyoneering to Kawasan Falls, or a pre-dawn ride up to Osmeña Peak for sunrise (about an hour by private car or habal-habal from Moalboal).
- Head back to Cebu City after lunch. Allow 3-4 hours by bus, plus time to reach the airport if you are flying out that night.
- Don't book a flight before about 8 pm on this day. The road north is slow.
Route 3: One northern island
Our itineraries page already has a 3-day plan that combines Bantayan and Malapascua. That route moves every day. If you would rather unpack once, pick just one island and give it two nights.

- Day 1: Leave the Cebu North Bus Terminal (at SM City Cebu) early. For Malapascua, ride about 4-5 hours to Maya port, then take a boat of roughly 30-45 minutes. For Bantayan, ride about 3-4 hours to Hagnaya port, then a ferry of about an hour to Santa Fe. Arrive for sunset.
- Day 2 on Malapascua: a dawn dive at Monad Shoal for thresher sharks (certified divers), then a snorkel trip around the island, or simply Bounty Beach.
- Day 2 on Bantayan: rent a bike or scooter to explore the beaches and the old church in Bantayan town, or join an island-hopping trip.
- Day 3: Take a morning boat back and ride the bus to the city.
- Sleep: Bounty Beach area on Malapascua, or the Santa Fe beach area on Bantayan.
What to skip if you're short on time
- Don't mix north and south in 3 days. You would spend a full day just on buses.
- Skip Oslob on Route 1. Going from Moalboal to Oslob and back eats most of a day.
- Skip Osmeña Peak if you already do canyoneering. Two early starts in a row are tiring, and you need some time on the beach.
- Skip the city if you land in the morning and want the south. Go straight to the South Bus Terminal from the airport. See Mactan airport to Cebu City.
- Skip island hopping on a windy day. Choose waterfalls or the old city instead.
Tips for a smooth 3-day trip
- Book your 2 nights ahead around Christmas, Holy Week and Sinulog.
- Buses are cheap but slow. On Route 2, a private car or van with a driver saves hours for a group. See getting around Cebu.
- Carry cash. Small towns and boats rarely take cards. See money in Cebu.
- Pack light: one small bag makes bus and boat changes easy. Our packing list helps.
- From June to November, keep a backup plan for rough seas. Read typhoon season travel.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, take your rubbish with you and pay the small local fees. They help keep these places beautiful.
